U-Haul Assistant Controller in Phoenix, Arizona

U-Haul International is seeking an experienced candidate with a go-getter attitude to fill the role of Assistant Controller. Under the direction of the Chief Accounting Officer, and working in conjunction with another Assistant Controller, this Assistant Controller will be responsible for overseeing the departments that support Accounting (specifically the Bank Services and Fixed Assets Departments.)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Establishes and maintains the Company’s financial policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for ensuring the soundness of the Company’s financial accounting system.

  • Plan, organize, implement, evaluate, and modify financial programs, informational support systems and processes as needed.

  • Supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of financial accounting, budgeting, control and reporting principles, methods, techniques, and standards as applied within a business environment.

  • Analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, comparisons, impacts, and/or projections.

  • Analyze and interpret financial and systems support requirements, and provide consultations and recommendations to operational management.

  • Foster a cooperative work environment by using employee development and performance management skills.

  • Establishes and maintains financial records systems in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards and accounting principles.

  • Provides strategic consultation and representation to management on financial issues, to include financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue and expense analysis.

  • Provides support and leadership to managers in planning initiatives, through financial information analysis, reports and recommendations.

  • Research Accounting Guidance when issues arise.

  • Ensures the accurate and timely preparation, analysis, and summarization of financial records.

  • Institute monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing schedules.

  • Enforces, develops, and communicates company and department policies and standards.

  • Ensures the timely completion of important asset and liability account reconciliation.

  • Establish and applies a system of internal controls and accounting procedures which assure legal/fiscal compliance with laws and rules.

  • Participates in meetings with various levels of management to further the understanding of financial performance or communicate department needs.

  • Designs and implements continual improvement initiatives.

  • Directs and supervise all activities, functions, and personnel of the Fixed Assets and Bank Services Department

  • Provides technical and managerial leadership to supervisory staff.

  • Hires, trains, disciplines, evaluate, motivate, and provide guidance and leadership to the accounting department.

  • Evaluates the performance, effectiveness and growth of subordinates. Ensure the competency of each subordinate through increasing delegation of responsibility, authority and through formal and informal education. Interview, select, and evaluate the performance of department personnel. Initiate wage increases, promotions, disciplinary action or terminations, as required.

  • Keep abreast of new techniques in financial reporting, analysis or new technology.

  • Assumes additional managerial duties as appropriate to the position or as assigned by the Chief Accounting Officer.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA desirable or the equivalent in experience

  • 10-12 years accounting/finance experience including seven or more years in management. Experience in Big 4 Accounting Firm preferred.

  • Technical and comprehensive knowledge of all finance, financial planning, and financial accounting areas of a business.

  • Thorough knowledge of SEC reporting requirements required.

  • Knowledge of computerized information’s systems used in financial and/or accounting applications.

  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal), logic, reasoning and strong inter-personal skills.

  • Must possess the aptitude to work in a computerized environment
