Northern Arizona Healthcare Public Relations Specialist in Flagstaff, Arizona

The Public Relations Specialist supports the Marketing and Public Relations Manager in development and execution of public relations, media relations and crisis management strategies for Northern Arizona Healthcare.

Team and People

  • Creates a positive team environment as a contributing member of the department and organization, working with internal and external public relations and communication champions.

Story Development and Dissemination

Under the direction of the Marketing and Public Relations Manager:

  • Works collaboratively with system leadership and providers to develop stories and content that support brand messaging and service line growth.

  • Develops, pitches, promotes, and secures placements of stories in local, regional and national media.

  • Writes News Releases, and supports the organization of Press Conferences and Media Briefings.

  • Identifies provider, family, patient and community members who can be profiled in story-telling; obtains and maintains releases/consent forms.

  • Consistently monitors media for developing stores and secures third-party commentary placements of health system experts.

  • Helps to maintain and execute public relations and story-telling editorial calendar.

Media Relations

  • Assists in the execution of the strategic media relations plan that supports the programmatic and business goals of Northern Arizona Healthcare.

  • Develops, cultivates, and maintains relationships with reporters, editors, publishers, producers, floggers/influencers and other media professionals.

  • Handles after-hours media request schedule, as well as requests, along with the Marketing and Public Relations Manager.

Speech Writing and Crisis Communication Support

  • Prepares talking points, and other messaging for senior leadership.

  • Supports the Marketing and Public Relations Manager in the implementation of crisis communications plan.

Compliance/Safety

  • Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

  • Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.

  • If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

  • Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

Education

Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications or journalism - Required

Master's degree in public relations, communications or journalism degree in marketing, communications - Preferred

Certification & Licensures

Valid Arizona driver's license

Experience

Five (5) years experience in strategic communications and media relations with increasing responsibilities and oversight - Required

Demonstrated skills and abilities in writing, public speaking and interpreting concepts/ideas into written and/or verbal form to selected audiences - Required

Must have crisis communication skills and strong knowledge of integrated communication and public relations practices, methods and strategies. - Required

Proven media relations experience including the ability to promote human interest stories and clinical news to local, and regional journalists - required (national level - preferred)

Demonstrated track record in pitching stories and increasing share of voice on local and regional levels - required (national level - preferred)

Prior work experience within the healthcare industry - strongly preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
