Special Information

This postdoctoral scholar position is renewable (with annual evaluations) and would require relocation to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. The ideal start date would be June 1, 2021, although it is possible to adjust this date to accommodate the ideal candidate.

This position is subject to the availability of funding. The incumbent is not eligible for Service Professional non-renewal notice, or Classified Staff layoff or recall status.

Job Description

The Planetary Exploration Laboratory (PI: Dr. Mark Salvatore) in the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science at Northern Arizona University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work on quantitative remote sensing of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV) of Antarctica. The successful candidate will become a member of a multidisciplinary research project that is investigating the relationship between geology, hydrology, and ecology in the MDV. They will work closely with collaborators at several institutions to integrate these remote sensing data into ecological models to generate habitat suitability maps throughout the MDV over a range of past, present, and future environmental and climatic conditions. The successful candidate will also engage in several other related and independent tasks, including assisting with outreach activities geared towards underrepresented and underserved populations, publishing scientific papers, presenting at national and international conferences and, if desired, submitting proposals for external funding.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A PhD in remote sensing, applied spectroscopy, quantitative ecology, geographic information sciences, or related field,

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD with a focus on satellite data processing, analysis, and interpretation.

  • Experience in correlating surface observations with ground validation of satellite data, particularly in the field of visible/near-infrared (VNIR) spectroscopy; and

  • Experience and/or interest in correlating terrestrial and planetary remote sensing data;

  • A record of collaborative and interdisciplinary research experience; and

  • Demonstrable success in disseminating research results, including conference presentations and publications

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Proficiency with relevant software, including (but not limited to) ENVI, ArcMap, and Matlab

  • Independently develop laboratory, field, and remote analyses to advance the project in the spirit of the originally proposed work

  • Lead and/or participate in defined outreach activities with local Native American communities through interactions with NAU’s American Indian Mobile Educational Resource (AIMER) Program

  • Serve as a liaison to outside collaborators to ensure the success of this project

  • Serve as a mentor to graduate and undergraduate students assisting with this project (and related projects)

  • Assist in fostering a collaborative learning and work environment for all members of NAU’s Planetary Exploration Lab (e.g., helping to organize seminar series, providing guidance to other members of the team, helping to develop standards, procedures, and protocols)

Background Information

Salary

$57,000. Commensurate with experience.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service (http://azregents.asu.edu/rrc/Policy%20Manual/6-310-Conditions%20of%20Postdoctoral%20Scholar%20Service.pdf) .

NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
