The French Lab (toddfrenchlab.com) at The Pathogen and Microbiome Institute (PMI) at Northern Arizona University (pmi.nau.edu) has an exciting and unique opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher. The French Lab works broadly across disease ecology and studies of host pathogen interactions. We are seeking highly qualified applicants to formulate research strategies, and to develop cutting-edge approaches for investigating the evolution of bacterial virulence factors and their functions in pathogenesis. We hypothesize that many pathogenic bacteria of environmental origin (i.e. the etiologic agents of Legionnaires disease, tularemia, cholera, bubonic plague and others) cause disease in humans by accident. Most likely, interactions between pathogenic bacteria and other species in the environment provides a 'training ground' that favors the evolution of self-defense measures which double as virulence factors in human disease. The Appointee will have the opportunity to work with the field's top research and clinical experts, and receive training for research on biodefense-related pathogens (BSL-3). The successful candidate's primary responsibility will be to formulate, test and apply innovative strategies to investigate bacterial virulence mechanisms in an ecological/evolutionary context, with an eye toward eventual deliverables such as the development of therapeutics or bioremediation/biocontrol strategies. The appointee will have at their disposal the extensive interactions of the collaborative network at PMI, as well as the associated unique capabilities and facilities. The position includes a highly competitive salary and excellent benefits. NAU is currently engaged in an Organizational Growth and Effectiveness Initiative, which focuses on positioning the University for future success of its operational practices. As a result, some aspects of this position may be subject to change, such as, but not limited to: duties, titles, reporting structure, etc.
