Job Description

Reporting to the Writing and Editing Manager at University Marketing, this position will be overseeing our content publishing needs in a fast-paced work environment and working with a team of writers to develop compelling and engaging content for marketing and branding purposes.

The Content Editor is responsible for:

  • Editing and proofreading all written content that supports the university’s marketing and branding goals to ensure quality of writing, accuracy, consistency, and the appropriate voice and tone being applied to resonate with the intended target audiences.

  • Leading written content development for digital and print media consistent with identified marketing content strategy.

  • Acting as a chief writer and editor for high profile publications, presentations, and other content in support of university strategic communications.

  • Managing and maintaining the university writing style guide.

  • Managing the university’s content repository to ensure it becomes an efficient content tool for the campus community.

  • Managing projects and plans as assigned to ensure timely completion of objectives. Tracking all projects to identify ways to streamline and measure productivity and outcomes.

  • Developing and maintaining intentional relationships to promote teamwork and leverage other content contributors across the institution.

  • Managing some content team staff as assigned.

  • Coordinating with and managing freelance contributors as needed to ensure project completion.

  • Serving on committees as required and delegated.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or related field and at least 3 years of progressively responsible marketing or communications experience.

  • Superior knowledge of AP and Chicago Manual of Style best practices.

  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to manage multi-faceted projects and communicate expectations and outcomes to a variety of audiences.

  • Experienced in team management.

  • Master’s degree in English

  • Strong background in writing and editing

  • Strong background in marketing

  • Experience in higher education

  • An understanding of the culture, structure, and principles of institutions of higher education, including experience in working to achieve results across units/divisions and functions.

  • Knowledge of best practices in marketing and communications.

  • Knowledge of SEO, web writing principles, and industry best practices in digital content creation.

  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.

  • Superior editing skills: excellent grammar, spelling, and proof-reading skills.

  • Exceptional writing skills and the ability to adapt style to a variety of topics and situations.

  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to manage multi-faceted projects and communicate expectations and outcomes to a variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate academic content to non-academic audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage quick turn-around on writing and other duties.

  • Ability to manage multiple small projects simultaneously with large project obligations.

  • Ability to work successfully with faculty, staff, higher education leadership, and other constituents.

  • Ability to effectively communicate in written, oral, and digital formats.

  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report ( . The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report ( is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

The budgeted salary range is $62,000 - $67,000.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents.
